Cluster Development Program: Advancing Regenerative Agriculture in South India

28-29th August 2024
Venue: Chintmani Clusters

The Cluster Development Program (CDP), implemented by Core CarbonX (CCX) along with Waycool, a prominent agri-tech company is a three-year initiative designed to drive the adoption of natural farming—also known as regenerative agriculture—across six clusters in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. This program is critical in promoting sustainable agriculture that boosts productivity while restoring and enhancing the natural ecosystem.

Project Progress:

In August 2024, the CCX team conducted an intensive farmer onboarding process in the Chintamani (CKB) cluster of Karnataka. The team visited 33 farmers across six villages: Mudachintlahalli, Anoor, Hadigere, Kachalli, Bramhanadinne, and Bittaganahalli. These field visits were crucial in assessing current agricultural practices and understanding the challenges faced by farmers in transitioning to regenerative methods.

Key Findings:

  • Current Practices: The majority of the farmers currently rely on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which, while effective in the short term, lead to long-term soil degradation, reduced fertility, and increased dependency on external inputs.
  • Economic Challenges: Farmers expressed concerns about the high cost of chemical inputs and the fluctuating prices of their produce, which affect their overall profitability.
  • Interest in Regenerative Agriculture: Despite these challenges, there is a growing interest among farmers to shift towards natural farming practices that are less resource-intensive and more sustainable.

Why Regenerative Agriculture is Critical:

Regenerative agriculture is essential for reversing the damage caused by years of chemical farming. This approach focuses on restoring soil health through practices like crop rotation, organic manure application, and reduced tillage, which in turn improves water retention, reduces erosion, and enhances biodiversity. By transitioning to regenerative practices, farmers can reduce their dependence on chemical inputs, lower production costs, and increase the resilience of their crops to climate variability.

Support and Next Steps:

Farmers who join the CDP will receive extensive support to ensure a smooth transition to regenerative agriculture. The CCX team will provide:

  • Customized Crop Plans: Tailored Plans of Practice (POPs) for each farmer, focusing on sustainable crop management, pest control, and disease prevention.
  • Soil Fertility Enhancement: Encouragement to plant green manure crops such as Sun-hemp, Dhaincha, and Horse gram. These crops are vital for biological nitrogen fixation, which naturally enriches the soil without the need for synthetic fertilizers.
  • Technological Interventions: Introduction to new farming technologies and methods that improve efficiency and productivity while maintaining ecological balance.
  • Continuous Monitoring: Regular field visits, audits, and hands-on guidance to address any challenges faced by farmers during the transition.

Impact and Future Outlook:

The CDP is set to have a profound impact on the agricultural landscape of South India. By fostering a community of farmers committed to regenerative practices, the program aims to restore soil health, increase crop yields, and improve the overall economic well-being of the farming community. This initiative not only supports the livelihoods of individual farmers but also contributes to the broader goal of building a sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.
